The nominations for the 91st Academy Awards have been named; we want to congratulate acclaimed costume
designer Ruth E. Carter (“Black Panther”) and renowned musical composer Terence Blanchard (“BlacKKKlansman”) for their Oscar nominated achievements.
Both Carter and Blanchard share a long work history with two-time Oscar nominee, celebrated film director Spike Lee, whose “BlacKKKlansman” received a Best Picture nomination.
Blanchard has scored numerous films for Lee, and according to his IMDB profile, he is a world renowned trumpeter/composer/band leader and Blue Note recording artist, described as the most prolific jazz musician to ever compose for motion pictures. Blanchard was born and raised in New Orleans where he studied with the Marsalis brothers at the famed New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts. In 1980, he won a scholarship to Rutgers University and immediately began performing in the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. Two years later, he succeeded Wynton Marsalis in the legendary Jazz Messengers before forming his own influential groups. Blanchard originally began performing on Spike Lee’s soundtracks, including “Mo Better Blues” in which he ghosted the trumpet for Denzel Washington.
Carter’s portfolio too reflects a lengthy list of credits on Lee films, among others. She has more than 50 film credits with three (3) Oscar nominations (“Amistad,” “Malcolm X,” “BlacKKKlansman”). Some of Ruth E. Carter’s film projects are listed here:
